Have you ever wondered what is on the minds of the people in congress? As a fly on the wall, what would you hear in the debates on the House floor? What stories drive these debates?
Telltale is a proof of concept news reader that sources news based on the Congressional Record. Leveraging the Capitol Words API, we extract the most common n-grams and then process this list with some natural language processing to identify the most frequent word collocations. These then become search terms to find relevant news. The collocations are displayed on the left side of the page grouped by date and ordered by frequency. Over time you can get a good sense of the most pressing issues in congress.
Behind the scenes, Telltale uses Zato Novo's Odessa platform for retrieving data from Capitol Words. This works by accessing the meta data for the API via Odessa and then using its included denormalization toolkit to transform the JSON into a denormalized table that is easy to use in data analysis. The goal of Odessa is to simplify data interoperability by using inference and smart defaults to transform and join data together without the need for elaborate queries. This approach makes it easier to conduct analysis as well as integrate data feeds into applications such as Telltale.
Over time, additional sources will be added for other novel approaches to finding relevant news.
